Ewan McGregor Makes a Very Good Case for Wearing Your Effed-Up White Sneakers with Everything

What to do when your summer white sneakers aren’t so white anymore.

The expiration date for wearing sneakers is never but how you wear them is what changes over time. When you’re young you live in your sneakers, they are you, you are them, and you only buy new ones when a pinky toe finally burst through your nylon upper. When you’re old, sneakers are basically weekend dress shoes—well maintained, a tactical choice. Ewan McGregor, however, is not about that noise. The 47-year-old rolled onto “Late Night with Seth Meyers” last week wearing a pair of Stan Smiths that looked like they’d been collected from under a trampoline. That is, properly scuffed with dirty, double-knotted laces, a total effing afterthought. And the guy looked good.

Sure, McGregor showed his age by wearing his Adidas’ kicks with white ankle socks (the kind we’re strongly against) but his leg ink (above) dated him in a much cooler way and did an excellent job of neutralizing any dorky dad vibes. And, anyway, the beauty of the whole thing was that he wasn’t trying to be Justin Bieber. The rest of McGregor’s outfit was classic and well-fitting, his haircut looked expensive, and his legs were crossed like a gentleman. Ewan McGregor is owning the fact that he’s pushing 50, it’s just that, for him, that doesn’t necessarily take beat-up sneakers off the table. Honestly, what could be more sensible than that?

By all means protect your Common Projects from everyday street dirt so you can still wear them with your suits. Go right ahead and preserve your Off-White Prestos from getting trampled on at a concert. Feel free to indulge in the crispy goodness of some fresh-from-the-box white Vans. But also have a few pairs, or one special one, that get an all-access pass to your life. And then wear those ones out to dinner. They earned it as much as you did.
